THE 2'S - SCREEN AND SLEEP

THE 2'S - SCREEN AND SLEEP

HOW YOUR BEDTIME COMPANION IS BECOMING YOUR FOE

"She was sleeping a sleep that wasn't her own and the gadgets to which

she was connected didn't make a sound." By- Polo Giordano

What is something you turn to when you're all lonely and caught up in yourself and you want something to spend your time on?

Isn't it your phone……? but did you realize that your constant companion can also ruin your life?

In today's digital world, gadgets like mobile phones and laptops are prevalently used by the masses. These gadgets have increased significantly, especially in children and teenagers, after a tedious daily routine. Teenagers tend to use the night as leisure time to scroll through their phones. Usually, people ignore their sleep to use their phones at night, which hampers their overall sleep quality and then fail to perform well at work or are unable to study due to a feeling of tiredness throughout the day. The brain needs sleep to function to its potential best, failing, resulting in low productivity. Some people who have insomnia may be victims of depression and anxiety.

Infact, according to the scientists children and teenagers are extra sensitive to the effects of blue lights because of which limiting evening screen time is important to prevent sleep issues.

Human body has a hormone named - Melatonin, released by pineal gland which helps in regulating the sleep and wake cycle. When the level of Melatonin in human body went down, it might lead to sleep problems and tiredness. Watching violent content or using social media before bedtime lead to alertness and delay sleepiness. Alertness or melatonin levels can be affected by passive technology such as a television, smartphone that emits sounds, vibrations, and lights which leads to

sleepless nights. One of the most potent effects on your internal body clock is blue wavelengths. Blue light is an almost constant presence in our lives thanks to our favourite electronic devices, but too much of it can cause various problems, including poor sleep. Blue and white light exposure too close to bedtime can cause sleep disruptions, leading to insomnia.

Sleep is a basic need and screen is a want, and it should be treated so. Putting your gadgets aside before sleeping would be a wise act.
